With the water receding, a large amount of (formerly submerged) houseboat fire debris is now exposed. Such a sad situation and very hazardous…we did our best to help by picking up what we could. But we lacked tools (and capacity) to get it all.

WARNING: There’s about 200 yards of sand beach littered with broken glass and sharp metal shards. Blowing sand has partially or fully buried much of it just below the surface. Be sure kids are wearing shoes in the area this summer, coordinates are below.

This large, twisted framework really needs to be removed before May. Once the lake rises, this re-sumberged steel could potentially rip open a hull. A cordless angle grinder will be needed to cut down to manageable pieces so we were unable to remove this.

Here’s some of the larger debris…we got the melted fenders, ropes, melted glass panes and whatever smaller pieces we could. Filled 3 large trash bags.

Fire got pretty hot…

…why??

Here’s the location if anyone has the resources and time to help out…perhaps a good 2025 Trash Tracker target?

Just to close on a positive note, there’s still plenty of beautiful sand beach here. Stay away from the affected area if you’re barefoot and you’ll be fine👍😎

When there's an automobile Accident , the insurance company pays the tow truck drivers to clean up the broken pieces. Is there any such requirement for a boat? Who cleaned up the rest of the Debris , would they be required to come back Since they were unable to complete the job?
When I read my boat policy, I see a line for coverage that relates to wreckage removal. That’s what would cover the cost of cleanup.

I believe that coverage isn’t in the base policy, so insureds are paying extra premium for the coverage, and it’s also a variable amount. So cheaper policies would have little to no Coverage.

Couple that with the fact that houseboats are owned in LLCs, it is very possible that the wreckage mentioned here is past its limits of coverage, and with no value remaining in the houseboat I don’t know how you would compel a defunct LLC to finish the cleanup.

I seem to remember that Powell (or Aramark?) required that coverage but I don’t know how much. And just like almost every other issue here, how would you possibly enforce that mandate?

I think it would be interesting to get NPS’s take on the cleanup. Not sure if you would get an actual answer.

Thank you for replying with how your insurance would cover this. I have.
Not enough time in my life to try to get an answer from the national park service. I just hope it's not covered with water before trash trackers get out on the lake this year. I hope to be able to participate in a trash tracker trip someday.

Trash Tracker Team 5 located the debris last Thursday 6/5, spent Thursday afternoon and Friday breaking down aluminum railings and collecting debris. We filled half the Eliminator with large aluminum railings, melted aluminum, glass, plastic, fiberglass, grommets, etc.

Many thanks to NPS and Aramark for making this possible. And additional thanks to the NPS crew who showed up at the Stateline Aux ramp Monday morning with heavy equipment and a dump truck to lift the debris out of the Eliminator.

The heavy lifting is done but the area still needs work. We'll go back but please, when you're in the area, take a few heavy duty trash bags and spend an hour or two collecting on this big beautiful beach.
