Mid November trip?

Dorado

Keeper of San Juan Secrets
Contemplating a mid November trip, only fished the fall a couple times, and the water was still warm with pretty spotty fishing (late September/early October). I retired in September, been busy bird and elk hunting, but would like to get a final trip in boat before putting it in the shop for the winter.

I have read of great striper and walleye in November, curious if the bass and crappie still bite as the water gets cooler? Would go out of Bullfrog. Any thoughts/recommendations from those with experience?

congrats on retiring. we’ve never looked back,
enjoying full time vacationing, & busier than ever for
some odd reason.
our experience in nov, (but it’s s.lake), tough w/s&lmb&crappie.
stripers very hit & miss, a few days being skunked then you
find yourself atop of hungry biters & load up.
but the lake will most likely be flat, few humanoids, & cool temps,
but shorter days.….aka….almost perfect.
currently, we’re looking at a december trip, quite possibly up in the northland,
called bullfrog. would be going in nov, but for that 1st paragraph.
yes, we’d go in nov if everything lined up.
ya don’t have to catch fish to be happy, especially on powell.
granted, it helps out though.
you’re an exceptional fisherman (from years of reading your postings).
no doubt you’ll figure out those didget’less aquatic, gill-bearing critters
out in short order.

3 of us are headed down on the 15th for a few days. I love Powell in November. We have had great success north of Bullfrog many years. We mainly flat-line troll for Stripers in 15-35 feet with any good true running crankbait or lipless bait. Normally the weather is a bit brisk running up the lake in the morning but usually all you need is a jacket in the afternoons. I'll be in a white 19 ft Polarcraft Kodiak boat with white Evinrude motors. Stop and say hi

My experience is that November is about as good as it gets. Looking through my pictures, the years we go in November always have coolers, livewells, and fillet tables overflowing with fish, including lots of crappie and walleye. We typically find the crappie by trolling for stripers. 🤷‍♂️

These are always the early half of November. I would guess that mid-November would still be great.

November may be my favorite month of all personally. Water still in the 60's and all species are going strong. Not so much on LM but SM are still aggressive just a little deeper in my experiences. Stripers are schooled and fishable in every way. Get on top and spoon them forever and a mile ! Hope to see you there !

Awesome encouragement! I hope to head down around the 10th or so, depending on the weather. I would go this weekend, but we are going to North Dakota for a final pheasant trip!
Looking like I might be solo, I will be in a gray Ranger Reata. Trying to decide whether to boat camp up lake or come back and sleep in the camper…

let’s see…recently retired, elk hunting, ndakota for pheasant,
and adding in a powell trip…and your decision matrix is boat
camp or sleep in camper.
to everyone else - need i say more??
senior dorado, that’s a fine example of setting a high bar!!!
bravo to you, sir.

I will be there hopefully the 8th and I'm going to stay around Halls and BF. Hope to find biters by then, but first trip was a little slower then most fall fishing. But its according to weather fronts, and when a guy hits it. I will be there for a week in the BF slips, so I will have more time to hunt them down. I would like to meet you if I see you and your dogs I will yell at you.

Sounds like you better go Dave! Congratulations on retiring! I hope I get to retire soon 😃

That weekend your planning is Veterans Day weekend….or holiday weekend where folks have an extra day off. Not sure if that will up the crowds or not but just figured I’d throw it out there as I’m going whitetail hunting that weekend and we’ll surely see more people than usual because of it! Figured since you’re retired, maybe you’d want to dodge any kind of holiday weekend. I’ll be anxious to see the report when you return!

Trying to get back down veterans weekend as well. Probably just staying at the campground this time.
Would love to meet up with you Lake Powell legends!

Trent: don’t think the holiday has as much effect when the night time temperatures are in the 30’s and the party crowds are gone🤣
