Friday was the best day numbers wise that I’ve ever had, by a big margin. I never keep track of number, and in this case our estimate sounds too absurd when I typed it.
We hit two spots near Gregory butte early and had 10+ Smb in the boat, dinks up to 1.5lb. My son was throwing a Ned rig and had the majority of them. I had a few on hula grubs.
Then we ran up to the friendship area and were doubled up on our first casts. It was a nearly every cast deal for a couple hours. We pretty quickly switched my son to a hula grub just because the faster fall increased the catch rate. Color didn’t seem to matter, but we used mostly watermelon and smoke. There were some respectable 2lb+ mixed in.
By noon my son had caught his fill wanted to explore mid lake canyons and do some hiking.
We started fishing again around 2 near the mouth of the San Juan. We hit a couple pretty good spots, before finding the spot of the day. It was another every cast situation until we had to race back to the ramp. The quality of fish was even better up here. We also mixed in a striper and walleye, both on jigs.
Saturday we went back out for the morning but didn’t go as far or work as hard. We got around 20 smb near the mouth of last chance, with a few 2lbish mixed in. We tried some new spots that looked promising, but never duplicated our Friday results.
Years like this are special, get out if you can.
