I had asked 5 different people in Page to go fishing with me, but everyone cancelled and I ended up going by myself. The launch ramp at Wahweap Marina was open to local boats only from 7am-8pm. I arrived at 730am with no waiting in line to launch. The wind forecast predicted 10-20mph beginning around noon. Morning was less than 5mph. The Page area had experienced near record breaking high temps during the week. Water surface temp in the main channel was 70*F which was an increase of about 11 degrees in the past 7 days.
At about 9am, I started fishing the shady side of Padre Point (east facing) with a nightcrawler added to my 3" single tail jig in hopes of finding walleye. The smallmouth started biting immediately and I was catching them at a rate of about 5-7 per hour. I fished there for about 1 hour then went to east side of Padre Bay. There is a hidden cove along the east wall of Padre Bay directly west of Padre Point. It tends to collect tumbleweeds and can be a good spot to catch largemouth.
At about 10am I started fishing the hidden cove. The smallmouth continued to be on fire in that location too. I did not catch any largemouth and there were smallmouth nests where the water was about 3 feet deep in the back of the cove. I fished the hidden cove for about 4 hours. I kept about 1 smallmouth for every 4 caught. Other species I caught there were 1 catfish, 3 bluegill, and 1 striper. I released the 2 pound catfish and the bluegill, but kept the 1 pound striper. The water clarity was about 30 feet deep. I had observed a school of about 10 catfish swirling around in 15 feet deep water in the back of the cove. There were a couple schools of stripers near the mouth of the hidden cove. While I was jigging the verticle walls for smallmouth, schools of stripers would go between me and the wall. There were about 100 stripers in the 1-3 pound range in each school in 10-20 feet water. The striper schools were not interested in my jig, but the smallmouth were attacking it. I was able to watch the striper schools visually swim by me about 10 times. I was not using the sonar and could actually see the fish to positively identify them. There was probably 2 or 3 different striper schools swarming back and forth along the wall. I was able to watch one striper hit my lure and catch it. All the others ignored it.
At about 2pm. I began fishing the rock piles along the east wall of Padre Bay. The water was like a sheet of glass. No wind....yet. I caught 1 walleye and several more smallmouth. The smallmouth were the most aggressive I have ever seen them. If I had attached 2 jigs on one line, I probably could have caught smallmouth 2 at a time, it was that crazy. Whenever a smallmouth was hooked, other fish were biting at the jig in its mouth while reeling it in.
At about 5pm, a wall of wind abruptly arrived and conditions went from calm to white caps in about 3 minutes. I stopped fishing and headed back to the marina with a 15-20mph head wind. Overall, I fished for 8 hours and caught about 40 fish representing 5 different species consisting of 1 catfish, 3 bluegill, 1 walleye, 1 striper, and 35 smallmouth. A total of 12 fish were kept consisting of 1 striper, 1 walleye, and 10 smallmouth. I did not take any pictures since I was fishing by myself, but decided to post this fishing report since Wayne was needing reports badly. Hope this helps.
