Left Wahweap at O-dark-thirty on the 18th headed for the San Juan. Never got past Friendship and Rock Creek. In front of Friendship there was a channel wide boil ongoing so we launched both fish boats, leaving the ladies on the houseboat to fend for themselves. Steadily caught boiling stripers for nearly an hour...total 30+ fish that were 3-5# and the best condition I've seen in my 35 years on Powell. They were super strong and made us work to land 'em. So much for the San Juan. Pulled into Friendship found a great, well protected site and stayed the entire week. That afternoon about 3pm saw a boil off the back of the HB in F'ship so we launched again to another 30+ success. Not a bad start. Had a couple mornings where we only caught small mouth but at others we'd find a boil and did very well. The next morning there was another boil that started near the boulder islands on the south side of the main channel and proceeded to the Rock Creek bouy. One evening found a very subtle, scattered boil (more dimpling) on the left side (1/2 mile from the end) going into Main Rock Creek. Again many fine stripers! What fun!! This school could have been caught on jigs at 50' also....but I'd rather cast to them. The back of Main Rock is full of shad and lots of stripers at 50-70'. It's gonna boil big time one of these days. Overall it's the best week of boil and jig fishing I've seen. We have fish to give away, any takers? My preferred surface lure is a Skitter Pop, the 4" size. I don't think color make much difference but I like red/white and a silvery based color. They cast, pop and catch fish well.
