Lone angler at Lone Rock

Took the kayak out of Lone Rock beach today. Living in Apple Valley its only 2 hours to the South lake vs 4 or 5 to Bullfrog were the big schools seem to be. Haven’t faired well there or Warm Creek lately as the shad population shrinks each day. Went back into some shallow coves to the west and found a couple coves where smallies and largemouth were chasing very small shad schools. Caught 5 or 6 bass on cranks then landed a striper around 4 pounds but skinny. Picked off a few more bass east of Lone Rock again in coves. Decided to troll midday in 40-50’ and found the striper bite and caught another six some small others in that 3-4 pound size. The bigger fish were skinny and them smaller fish fat. They seemed to like the trolling flies on leadcore best. My high school buddy in MN makes these cool shad feather jigs but I was out of them and waiting for the next shipment otherwise think I would have done even better. The stripers were pretty spread out so not much opportunity to spoon. Water was 58-59 and the weather was fantastic. Flat water and warmed to 60.

Wayne fished almost exclusively out of the South end and usually found a way to be successful. I've had some of our best trips at the dam, power plant intake, and Navajo canyon. You'll find what works and where.
Thanks for the tips and encouragement guys. I may try to launch at Wahweap and paddle out to the dam or try Navajo now that the houseboat/ski boat crowd isn't there. Tried Wahweap once and was fighting a striper off a shallow point and this guy drove his rental houseboat between me and the point. Good thing the striper didn't swim under the houseboat. Haven't gone back since but maybe it's time.

You can also launch a kayak from the Antelope Point public ramp. That would save you a ton of time and paddling for Navajo Canyon.
