Hurricane Hilary

I know there are many on this site with a lot more storm experience than me, but I was there in 2013 when a hurricane just like this came up from the south and even the remnants of that storm had a huge impact at Powell - cold, rain, blew every houseboat I saw sideways, and took out the Rainbow Bridge hiking trail for a long time.

Normally I'd love the rain, but I am a little bummed as our once a year trip starts Sunday and I am worried that is not great timing. Be careful out there everyone! :)

I live on the coast in South Orange County, CA and were are buttoning down the hatches.
We had a trip planned to fish offshore today and that got canceled.
Instead we moved my buddies 29 foot sport fisher from the slip and onto the trailer yesterday and the ramp was busy!
Going to help another friend this afternoon do the same thing.
Better safe than sorry.
Be safe and don't take this one lightly. It's a major storm and expected to be a cat 5 by the end of today.
Looks like a direct shot into San Diego.

Always at the mercy of Mother Nature. Hope your trip goes well but for the sake of the big picture, I also hope the link you sent rings true. Fill the lake!

Maybe just stay in the slip and make it a slip trip. Not always the funnest option but certainly the safest. Otherwise go out and set up extra anchor lines. I prefer tying to boulders over sand anchors when there is a known storm coming.

Good luck!

BC Eagle, thanks for that link, and yes, please be safe. jwhite4911 has a splendid idea with a 'slip trip'. When I was a kid we rode out a bad storm off Long Island in the slip, and our parents taught us to play scrabble & checkers. It can be a very bonding experience......but again safety first.

It's taking tremendous restraint not to comment on the name: Hilary......

;)

It will mellow out when it gets into that cold Pacific water, if it keeps tracking west. I just hope it busts up this high pressure that has been laying over Western Colorado since mid-June and allows some rain to come this way. We've got some catching up to do.

Currently on my way back to CA from a week in Powell. Currently in Vegas, and will be driving back to central CA tomorrow, a day ahead of the worst of it. Still, they expect likely desert rains Saturday in front of the big storm, and serious rain/wind Sunday in southern CA. Whether it translates eastward remains ti be seen. I will say that unrelated to that there was some serious lightning and wind in the north end of the lake the past couple of days, and heavy rain driving to Vegas today… full trip report soon…

Maybe the Salton Sea will get a nice boost from this?

California water works will get a challenge. I hope they can capture and soak up as much of this rain while they can. At least they have some room in the reservoirs now, but some of them could be dumping some AF to give them more room.

Lake Tulare will take longer to dry out which will be tougher for the farmers of that region.

We were there in 2013 also. Never been so scared as to have that much rain, coming down hard! And for so many days! And the ceiling had a leak... lots of pans on the floor. Windows leaking as well. Lots of emergency calls for boats that ended up sideways on the beach.

I was in Baja during the storm, South of Puerto Nuevo, we got lots of rain, but no wind or surf. At home we got a lot of rain as well, they lake rose nearly 3 feet. Wind was my concern, seems most of the mtns to the East protected the coastal areas from the winds?
We had a couple of Gusts that were LEGIT but besides that it wasn't even and strong as a big Santa Ana. 50 knots for sure on the big gusts but it was short lived and no roofs were lost in our neighborhood. Glad it's over so my wife can relax. The news had her all fired up.
