House boaters beware

Six months ago when I put my boat on the bouy for winter there wasent a mussel to be found , over this past week end when I was at the boat I lifted the motors I could not believe the amount of mussels on them, thousands . When I got over the shock I realized the intakes on the motors were filled with the little nasty things, while scraping them off , picking them out of the intakes it dawned on me to get out the sears wet dry vac and suck them out, it seemed to work great. Good luck

I know that they make “jack plates” that raise the engine up higher on bass boats, do they make them to completely lift the engine out of the water?? Sq

I left my motors down because I didn't want them to freeze thru the winter, I can and do leave them totally out of the water,

Those boats that are outboards will likely fare better than the sterndrive with the mussels.

But Powell isn’t the first lake to go through this. It would be nice if those of us with houseboats had a resource of what to expect with the new state of the lake and best practices to cope.

I wonder if you have the back of the boat facing the south or more sun if it would help I have only seen mussels in shade
