I am making my inaugural Lake Powell Houseboat trip on Thursday. My crew consists of 12 year old boys and their dads. Counting minutes until launch. Would you advise heading up or down lake and why? Thanks! J
Depends on what you are looking to do. The water will be clearer headed down. The water is stained to murky in the main channel at Halls crossing. the only clear water you will find headed up will be towards the backs of the first five or six canyons you come to. I would think that a good place to camp/park would be harder to find going down due to more people will be headed that way because of the stained water.
Go downstream to Rincon area to camp. Good water color, bass are biting but the better news is lots of slurping striper schools. Good luck to be had on 3 to 4 inch surface lures.
Can’t argue with Wayne. I think downlake is the way to go until runoff is done. And hopefully that isn’t until the end of July.
I should have taken photos, but we went across Rabbit Ears pass yesterday on the way to Steamboat. I’d say there was still well over 4’ of snow at the top. I’ve never seen that in June before.
