If you want to read a good book on WWI flying try to find a copy of "No Parachute" Its hard to find but its a compilation of letters home of one WWI pilot who survived the war. Many pilots died on their first sortie with less than 10 hrs TOTAL time in flight. I can't imagine going into war with only 10 hrs total time.
Thousands upon thousands of flights over the hump were completed. Just look at how we went to Berlin on the Berlin airlift. it wasn't much better but it was run by the guy who set up the Hump flying.
