This Friday my 13-YO son and I arrived at Wahweap 15min before it opened. The line was already very long and I was a little frustrated because I feared this may be the situation. We were probably 1/8 mile behind the 4 way stop before turning right into Wahweap Marina. To my surprise, once the ramp opened the line moved pretty quickly. By about 7:30 we were at the water, we arrived into Rock Creek - East side around 8:40 and there wasn't a boat around us.

Our Target Species was Walleye using 1.5 - 2.5oz bottom bouncers, all kinds flashy spinner stuff & N. crawlers.
Water temp was ~68 in the AM and warmed to 71 by afternoon. Walleyes were a little harder to come by this year. Maybe I just didn't find my groove. Usually I would have been out 3 or 4 times by now. A little rusty I guess!
We did manage to catch 5 really nice eyes which were all between 18-20" long. SM where doing really well most of the day (maybe 60 SM total). We also caught a bunch of really nice Sunfish, 1 Catfish, a few small stripers. I lost a nice LM near the boat. No crappie.. :(

We finished the afternoon around the Gregory Butte area and landed a bunch of SM but no eyes.

It was a solid day and my son had a blast. If the weather forecast holds, we'll be going this next weekend little further up lake and shore camping.

Sounds like you had an epic day. I'm heading back Friday. Want to target some walleye. Want kind of bottom bouncer rig do you use?

I build my own harnesses using 10lb fluorocarbon line and two #4 octopus hooks. I prefer using pencil style bottom bouncers between 1.0oz - 2.5 oz depending on depth. I'll make some rigs with metal blades, float spinners, and Smiles. LurePartsOnline.com is where I buy most my stuff. Color preference changes with each day it seems.

After several questions about my harness. Here are some pictures and a diagram. The snaps allow for quick exchanges for both weight and lure.
I use only 1/2 a night crawler at .05 to 1.0 MPH. A full crawler will just frustrate you as they steal the back of it.

I catch pretty much every species known to Powell using this method. Striper, crappie, Bluegill, SM, LM. Carp, Catfish. It doesn't snag up too either unless you're in brush. If you find you are snagging too much on rocks then lighten your weight but it's important to be on the bottom.

Try lots of colors. It's crazy how one day they want red, the next day green, and other days silver.

"That's why they call it fishing and not catching!"

Thank you for your post!
I have to try it

On another note- I have read an experiment by a fisherman who documented his trout fishing catches using ultraviolet treated lures and flashers against non treated ones. He had a 5 to 1 advantage (by the numbers of fish caught) using ultraviolet lures.
He trolled side by side for the experiment over many days fishing

I'm wondering if UV attractors might have an advantage .here on Powell

I think UV / Glow in the Dark stuff has it's place in life. I used to be a true believer in it when I Ice Fished in Wisconsin. Water clarity is obviously clearer here in LP. It would be a cool experiment! As an Engineer I could totally geek out on that topic. hmmmmmmmm! :geek:

How long of a pencil do you like, and where is the weight located on the pencil. I am guessing about 18 inches and the weight is about 2/3 of the way down the wire.
I have never used a pencil bottom bouncer, and your quick change is a great idea. Made a lot of standard bottom bouncers, and think I will give your style a try.
Thanks.

Thanks for the picture. Would be a lot easier to store a bunch of those in the boat than the traditional bottom bouncers.
What mold do you use to cast the lead? A little different shape than my traditional bottom bouncer mold.
