Keeper of San Juan Secrets
We arrived at Bullfrog on Friday and headed to Tapestry to fish and show the two first timers some “old dinosaur tracks”. Fishing was a little slower than normal but we caught blue gill, SM, LM, walleye, and stripers. We trolled crank baits, threw TRD’s and swim baits, along with everything else in the boat, all were about the same catch rate. We did better in the main channel than in canyons, main points and shelves seemed to be the best. In Moki @Rush gave us some worms and a jig to catch blue Gil and even put a marker out where he had caught them, now that’s some good info right there! Thanks again @Rush. @Littlesaltwash told us where he was fishing and shared what he was catching fish on too. He was targeting walleye and was catching quite a few SM. On the trip down we saw wild burrows, wild horses, coyotes, and antelope. Our trip was full of a variety of animals both on land and water.
Saturday we ran to Kevin’s island and marked a lot of fish but had a hard time getting a bite going so we headed back down river. Visibility was not as bad as I expected in GH, I would say around 2 to 3 feet. We ended up down by Hansen and caught more stripers. We had more than enough for a fish fry that a few of us had planned. That night we had the pleasure of @Rush, @greyhackle , buddy, little Joe, @Littlesaltwash , my SIL, his brother and son and my GS for a fish fry with @Littlesaltwash casserole, special salsa that joe brought and fresh fish and fries along with salads and the works! What a great group of people we have on this sight! I feel bad for the trollers that don’t get to meet the members but use our reports to catch fish, they really do miss out.
Sunday we headed down to hole in the rock for a history lesson, then off the CID where the sand has made it a short walk to get inside but it never disappoints. We caught fish along the shore at HITR and trolled some shelves coming back and caught fish with XD’s in Shad and red sizes 6 to 10. Water was glass, company was great and traffic was non existent, what a great trip!
While going through inspection @PFD pulled in behind us and I got to meet him and his girls, what a boat he has created! That’s all I can say about that! It was awesome to meet some of the members I hadn’t met and to meet up with old friends again. @Littlesaltwash is in the background if you look closely in one picture. Thanks to all who came to dinner, it was a special meeting at LP for a couple of hours!
I do have one complaint, who thinks rumble strips are necessary in such a remote place? Bugs me to death to pay for those with tax dollars, I have to pay attention when driving that stretch now too!
