I’ll start at the end and work back to the beginning. Today, Kaizyn (age 6) caught his first fish all by himself. Yesterday, he reeled in enough SMB that he finally said my arm is tired and settled in on treats and just enjoying being at LP. This morning he announced that he wanted to catch fish all by himself. So we, my son and I, bought some anchovies and headed for the Moki Wall. We fished and he decided that anchovy fishing is boring. We talked him into another half hour and just a couple minutes later he was shouting that he had a fish. After excited shouting and frantic reeling, he landed his first striper. After an hour and a number of stripers later, we fileted enough for a meal and headed for home. We also through a silver Kastmaster for awhile with no success.
Kyle and Kaizyn had arrived late Thursday and we fished all day Friday. We spent the day in Crystal Springs Canyon. Most of the time we drop shot. We caught 80 or so SMB, 1 walleye (really skinny) and a couple LMB. We mostly fished with Yamamoto shad shaped worms —
Baby Bass 305. Green Pumpkin w/Black fleck. 297. Blue Pearl w/silver fleck (clear) 031. We caught fish on all three colors but by far the most on the green pumpkin. I caught a couple using a Ned Rig, TRD color. We had fewer bites on the Ned Rig but this was our first try. The fish further back in the canyon were larger than those closer to main channel. We trolled for Stripers for a while had and two bites but didn’t hook up.
Thursday I fished alone and spent the day in Moki Canyon. It was pretty similar to Friday. I caught about the same number of fish using the same lures and methods. I caught the most fish drop shotting the pumpkin shad shaped worm. I had more success with the Ned Rig on Thursday; caught 6 SMB that way. Overall, the fish in Moki were larger than in Crystal Springs. Ended the having caught about 70 SMB, 1 LMB, 1 walleye (good shape), 1 striper (using the shad shaped worm), and 2 blue gills.
Thanks to whoever backed my truck in when I launched alone. And thanks to all those who gave rides up the Bullfrog ramp. It was a great trip. A first fish ... priceless.
