Fire on Navajo Mtn?

It doesn't sound like it is an area that is frequently visited though there have been other fires in the same area in recent years:

Many wild fires can smolder for days or weeks before breaking out enough to produce visible smoke, so probably a lot of uncertainty as to exactly when and what caused the initial ignition.

A few years back we had parked the houseboat in Oak Bay and noticed a wisp of smoke on Navajo. A couple days later it was a pretty good fire, lightning caused. Two Chinook helicopters were picking up water about 100 yds behind the houseboat, climbing to the fire, dispensing their load and returning for another cycle---about every 6-8 minutes. Was fun to watch. Chuck

Ok, back from a great day touring South Rim. We had never hit the outlooks east of the GC Village along 64 — Grandview, Moran, Lipen, Desert View. Much more impressive and colorful with views of the river than at the village.
Now, umm, where did I put the keys to the G4?

Looks like that smoke on the webcam at Wahweap is actually from the France Canyon fire up near Hatch. Satellite image shows a massive smoke plume coming from that fire right across the souther part of the lake, but not too much coming from the rather small fire on Navajo Mountain, and that blowing due east away from Wahweap as well.

Though your friend in RC might be close enough to be getting something from the Navajo fire.

Could be. He said everything was ok until the winds went to zero.
