Hi there wordlings. annyone else see the three massive drones flying in formation over the lake this morning, around 9am? Witnessed them over the narrows, heading up lake just before the entrance to warm creek.

Same airplane that John Denver died in?
Yup.

I liked his music. It saddened me that he died so suddenly. He had a great voice.
At least he died quickly. It was ugly though. He hit so hard that the rescuers only found parts. They identified him by a ring and that he had some toes amputated by an accident years earlier. Never found his head, right arm and several internal organs.
Hmm. I didn't mean to be so morbid. My apologies.
He was one of my favorite artists when I was a kid. I learned a lot of his stuff on guitar.

People do stupid stuff flying the canyons. There is some guy who joy flies a bright red bush plane in the winter around GHB. There have been several times I was sure that he was going to eat it, because he was going about 10’ above the water over by the floating heads. You might be able to pull up the flight plans for today on flight tracker.

Dick Rutan, the designer of the plane.
I think you mean Burt Rutan, he designed many things worlds beyond that kit plane. I think Dick was his brother? If I heard Burts name used with Edison, Kelly Johnson or Elon Musk it wouldn't be out of place to me, a truly ingenious designer. His Voyager plane that flew around the world on one tank of fuel is in the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum.

I loved John Denver but remember he'd lost his pilots license over his drinking problem and he was in a borrowed plane that day. Since each kit was customizable the fuel tank selector had been placed for a taller pilot up and out of his reach behind him. (that why they say "Experimental" on the door, not certified standard) He ran it out of fuel and spun in pushing in the rudder pedal for leverage straining to reach the selector. I think he's been running touch and goes out of Santa Monica and ran it out of gas, not the planes fault. Sad day, I remember it well, I was in the neighborhood learning to fly.

Also at Phillbo, Yeager didn't drink after his 20's so you didn't miss out on a drink with him but who was your dad, how did he know Chuck, Bud, Burt and Dick? I'd love to hear that story. Quite a group of guys to be around in your youth!

Whoops. You're absolutely correct.
I'm from an aviation background. What was I thinking....

Great post, I'm also a John Denver fan, and you bring up a forensic, but VERY important point: Leaving the earth in a millisecond before you can process or feel any pain might be a good way to go. The new stuff that just came out about the Titan submersible tragedy states just that. Doing what you love and exiting with no pain? A departed buddy always said: 'No one gets out of this alive'. I miss him....(y)

Of course, we're all glad no accidents reported from the 'drones' this time.

Back to your regularly scheduled pain....er.......thread......

I had a coworker recently show me his cool drone shots from his first trip to Powell this past summer.

How would you respond, knowing drones are not legal?
Lot’s of things are illegal at the lake 😮I fly a drone but only above my own camp to keep a video diary of my camp spots for reference later🤷‍♂️ if done respectfully and responsible it’s ok in my book.
