yep. we are actually planning on getting off the lake first thing Monday morning. long boat ride from the San Juan back to Wahweep. Hoping to beat the heavy wind.

Want to know how to tell the lake is fully opening this weekend...? When the W$&! looks like this for the duration of your planned trip when the park finally opens.

Such a sad and cruel world we live in.

What weather app do you use for Wind. For as much time as you spend on the lake, I assume you've found one that you think is pretty accurate

I don't know what the wind was Sunday at around 3:00 but we got stuck in huge waves coming out of Last Chance and had a foot of water int he bottom of the Champion. Scared the both of us bad enough to turn around and hide out until it got a little better. Don't do it!

I remember trips of camping for three days with non stop howling winds and four foot chop. Hiding behind a huge rock for cover, and eating sand.
Those are my not so fine Powell memories.
Did you folks in Page get that big thunderstorm the other night ? Looked pretty impressive on radar.

Funny how those memories fade more than the good times! We were at Blue Notch last Thursday-Sunday, the forecast was for very little wind, at least through Saturday. After a grueling drive, setting up camp and doing some fishing, we were exhausted and climbed into the tent with a light breeze ruffling the fly. Just as we were falling asleep, the wind began to howl, and the sand sprayed through the tent on our faces (even with the fly on and everything buttoned up). We made the move and slept in the cab of the truck, it shook in the wind until 4:00. This was not in any forecast I saw!! It reminded my of how things at LP go from fantastic to miserable and frightening in an instant....I forget how many nights I have spent tending to and worrying about the boat as you hear waves crashing into shore. I will now only boat camp in spots where the waves do not have a direct shot towards the boat, even if the camp spot may not be as good. I have seen the wind blow from every direction in just a few hours!!!

Powell can get downright nautical in an instant. And friken dangerous.
I fish a Lund, with serious V in the bow. We picked this boat specifically for Powell and bigger water. Even so, if it gets to rough, pull into the most sheltered cove possible and wait it out!

This is a common thought we always have and one of the great fascinations with Powell. Powell can be the most serene, calm, and peaceful place on earth, at other times and sometimes even within just minutes it can become hell on earth.
I have never spent any time on the south end of the lake. All my time the last 14 years has been spent on the north end and I have noticed over the years that the forecasts can drastically change and it seems like it seldom holds for a 5 day trip. I pretty much figure on at least one day of sucky wind. Over the years I've found places I can fish with different wind directions and places to camp that offer some protection. It seems like in that area up there the hard blows almost always are blowing up lake. Took me a couple years of eating sand like Dorado mentioned to figure that out so now I always camp on the down lake side of bays and somewhere that the waves don't push directly into.
I also have a SPOT and have one message programmed in that I can send to folks letting them know I'm delayed due to weather. If it's blowing much over 20 mph on a return day I'll sit it out and wait for the wind to let up a bit just so I don't have to face those nasty waves. It seems like th worst ones are always in that last stretch when returning to Bullfrog, the last 4 or 5 miles.
