Cathedral in the Desert 3661'

Hey WW, seems a little slow here so I thought I'd post my recent pics of CID last week at 3661' elevation. Been there many times at lots of different elevations, this one was pretty cool. There was a sandy beach to land on when you enter to the right. And there is water leading up to the waterfall. The one day we visited, there were 2 boats that made it in past the initial beach landing. I think the water was maybe 5-8' deep at it's deepest along the wall by the waterfall.

Amazing to see some ground in there. Last year when I paddled to it I couldn't poke the bottom at all. I wonder how many good storms it'll take to wash that beach away.
A couple of years ago one storm took a lot of the sand away! It was all the same level before that storm. I believe JFR was hiking in Capital reef and witnessed flooding over there too at the same time it cleaned out the CID. We need a few of those storms for Powell.

Yeah I was there late June, early July 2021 , when it was fully exposed and one big bench of sand that went halfway up the waterfall. About a month later much of that got washed out, that would been something to see! I think JFR was there immediately afterwards on his late August trip.

Yes, there was a huge flash flood that cleared out about 20-30 feet of sediment around Sept 1, 2021. It changed the whole place. That sandy beach is what remained to the side, and will likely remain since it’s no longer in the path of flow. Also interesting to realize that when the lake was at the current level of 3561 anytime before September 2021, the run up to the end would have been very shallow, and essentially walkable from 3555 and lower. Now since the Sept 2021 scour, I’m guessing the lake would need to drop below 3540-45 to be walkable…

We were in the Escalante from Friday the 27th to Tues. July 1st. Really nice, uncrowded, and a really great trip--super quiet at nights, with no knuckleheads, just the way I like it!! We checked out CID last Friday afternoon, and someone had spread out all their stuff to camp there. I guess I don't understand the point of camping there, only to have EVERYONE come through. We did not land because it seemed *invasive*. I really wanted to hike over that dune and see the waterfall, but I also didn't want to have to deal with all that stuff all over the beach.

If I was there with my kayak I would totally cowboy camp that for a night, but setting up that much stuff in such a spot seems greedy

There are very few circumstances where I would encroach on someone’s camp. But if I wanted to hike up CID, I’d walk right through.

And I’d certainly make sure that whoever was there knew the significance of the area.

That's ridiculous. I was kind of bummed a couple times we were there last week there were people each time but nobody was camping there. I would have pulled my boat right up in the front of that thing and asked to walk through their camp, or squeaked in around on the left like I saw some boats do. Where was their boat?? Was anybody in that camp when you took that?

There are certain spots on the lake I would argue should be off-limits to camping. That is one of them.

Most of us wordlings would agree with your CID thought....but wouldn't you agree that could be a slippery slope?

Do you then have spots that are off limits to 3 ft. 1500 LB wakes being purposely made that cause property damage, injury and maybe death?

Asking for a friend.....of course......

I have no problem with limits on surf locations either. Stay out of any canyon less than 500 ft in width when surfing. I have a surf boat and am fine surfing in the channel and away from anyone that doesn't want that wake. I have personally had issues with people surfing past my houseboat and would hate to do the same to anyone else.
