Canyon Pass Compliance

I've been here at Wahweap for the last week doing maintenance on my boats.

Yesterday I saw two rangers going boat to boat checking for Canyon Passes and Registrations. I have mine so they left me alone but they were making notes and going door to door. If anyone was onboard they were writing warnings and promising to follow up on every unregistered boat or on any boat not bearing this years (new and improved) Canyon Pass. One was doing most of the talking and had a T shirt on while the other was wearing a gun and had a bullet proof vest on. (it looked serious) And that's the point, Park Service seems to be getting serious and is promising to match owners to boats and to enforce compliance. They were nice enough when I asked questions and said that so far they are only seeing about 30% compliance.

FYI only

We got some crap for not putting our pass on the boat. Only didn’t because I’ve had bad luck with them washing off. Stuck it on finally because someone mentioned up lake enforcement. Our insurance card includes our swim deck, which put us in a higher more expensive category. Can’t say I was very happy about that. Haven’t interacted with a ranger up lake in 5 years now, and that was a toilet check.

It's the annual pass for your boat to be on Lake Powell not to be confused with an annual vehicle entrance pass or your State Registration. The Boat on the lake pass, aka The Canyon Pass price went up dramatically this year and it's a progressive increase. the bigger the boat the more the cost went up. In the past it was a lower one price fits all fee. Most houseboats moored in slips in the marinas haven't bothered to purchase The Canyon Pass on an annual basis, some never leave the slip so why bother. In the past enforcement of your boat bearing the "Canyon Pass" was mostly confined to when you brought your houseboat through the gate. like if you'd had it moved it to town for maintenance. The Ranger in the booth would make you buy one and they still will only now you have to pay a tiered price. Looking for extra revenue is the goal of Park Service here and they have promised enforcement and tickets for those not in compliance. It seems to have begun, that's one of the discussions on this thread.

I wrote in during the comment period and complained to Park Service about their plan before it was implemented. How they hope to enforce it and if they will have any of the $300,000 they hope to raise after paying to enforce it universally is dubious at best in my opinion. I also don't like the boat envy aspect of the soak the rich part of tiered taxes. I believe that if there is one place we should all be treated equally it's at our shared public lands. (no, I don't own a Bravada or Adonia, every boat I own is a pile of s*#* that I work hard to maintain and repair myself, it's just how I feel)
