we used to go camping on jet ski 3 to 4 times a year. This year was new as I acquired a 25’ jetboat. This leaves us with the capability to take more equipment with us. The ideas was to take paddle board with us for canyon exploration instead of the jetski that could get stuck with piece of wood.
The experience was good but we are not sure to do this again unless we will have a way to keep them inflated. It takes quite sometimes to find a good spot to anchor the boat inflate and then deflate 4 SUPs.
Also one day we learnt the lesson the hard way with a super strong wing starting to blow into a canyon while we were ready go back to the main channel were we anchored the boat. The wind was so strong that even laying down on the SUP and paddling with our arm like surfer, we could only do 1 mile per hour and every time we stop paddling we were running backward pretty fast.
Now the bad part of this trip. 2 years ago while camping in mountain sheep canyon I got bit by a scorpion. Not a fun experience with pain that keep me awake all night long and still pain for another 24 hours.
Since that I am bringing a UV light to watch for scorpion.
We camped in cottonwood, escalante, hole in the rock and never encountered any more scorpion.
This trip we camped in balanced rock. The first night I took my UV light out and my friends made fun of me for being paranoïde for one bite in 2 years.
While I turn the light ON we saw hundreds of them around us.
They were everywhere.
One night we went to mountainsheep to see if it was different and we also saw many.
While leaving the park we asked a ranger and she was not aware of so many scorpions
Is balanced rock a special canyon for that? Is there a season? Have any of you ever saw so many?
