BRC's Fill Lake Powell Project

If the above two posts are aimed at me... then I apologize.
My comments are not mentioned to start a debate about climate change. While that is a serious personal study of mine, I do not consider it appropriate here.

My intent is to get people to read the stuff I post. A lot of what I research is rejected for posting here because it is just plain stupid and not worthy of serious consideration. My comments are meant to encourage reading and contemplation and I was just trying to filter (or warn about) this article a bit.

I promised Bart to ease off the politics, and I'll keep that promise. But bear in mind, most commentary about what is coming down Re: lakes Powell and Mead is going to be highly politicized because of the different stakeholders. Its the nature of the game.

If BOR does what it should do...no one will be happy.

One reason we are worried about Lake Powell water levels, and how to stabilize and improve them, is that river flows have diminished significantly over the past decade or two. This is because the region is in a long-lasting and chronic drought. Drought is a longer term pattern separate from daily changes in weather, and is thus a manifestation of climate, which is the broader context in which day to day weather is playing out. Therefore, any discussion of current and future lake levels must of necessity involve a discussion of climate. Therefore, putting that topic off limits, or treating "climate" as some bad word that should not be mentioned simply inhibits productive discussion. People may get touchy as to why the climate is changing, but the hydrology from the past 20 years clearly demonstrates that it has, or we would not be having the problems with the lake that we are. Paladin's recent post provided a useful context for the current Pacific Ocean drivers of weather and climate going into this coming winter. Nothing wrong with that in my book - it is where the planet is right now, and it helps us look forward to anticipate what we might be getting in the way of snowpack, and what sorts of policy and management alternatives we might need to consider as a result.

Nothing wrong with discussing the climate, its current state, or its state over time (in the context of our shared interest in Lake Powell). We're just trying to avoid the politically-charged discussions of what is causing the climate to change - and, where, because of those theoretical causes, we think it will be in the future. Plenty of other sites available for participating in that bloodbath. Thanks!

Here is a good look at all the nomenclature that is being thrown around.

CO is circling the wagons. Notice the commentary about who has how many reservoirs.

In my view thee Navajos are clearly double-dipping!!

BTW, I have heard the NAPI is the largest contiguous farm in the US. Not sure about that but it is the largest farm I have ever been on (many, many times).

early but good.

Spent 30 years in Phoenix. Never understood why this concept did not prevail.

Well, here's one reason-- in 1922, California had 11 representatives in Congress. Arizona had 1.

(And just to complete the picture, Colorado had 4, Utah had 2, and Nevada, Wyoming and New Mexico each had 1.)

Good stuff. As highlighted in 24 month study thread, USBR forecast based on Jan 1 data. JFR mixes in current data, max probable looks more like probable probable to me with decent couple of months.

Moderators please delete if not allowed. Or maybe I should start a new thread separate from this one (I don't want to take this thread off topic...but it is kind of on topic and supporting the cause)? I am thinking about making some window stickers or bumper stickers that say "Lake Powell 3588" or "Fill Lake Powell 3588", or just "3588" in support of the BRC's Fill Lake Powell initiative. If you saw one of those on someone's car, truck, or boat you would know they are a Lake Powell supporter and are in favor of getting the lake back to 3588. How many of you would proudly display something like this? It could be a good conversation starter and education tool. I've got a vinyl cutting machine that would get the job done. It would be minimal cost to design and produce something like this. Part of the proceeds could be donated back to BRC to fight the good fight. Who would want to order one for their Truck, boat, car, RV, or tacklebox?

I would take a couple. I did something like that years ago and only sold a couple, see below. Sq. (This was a design from another wordling.)

I would buy some. It might be a smart idea to have a QR code or URL on it that linked to JFR’s proposal to get the Lake to 3588 or maybe to some other site about the Colorado river and water conservation or something like that.
