We have been waiting with much anticipation for the opening of Lake Powell so when it happened we made our annual boys trip down there.
We arrive Thursday afternoon and did a little bit of pre fishing from the shore on hobie cat beach. It just added to our excitement as we caught several dozen fish of different variety. My son even caught 2 huge carp which was super thrilling.
We launched out of bullfrog Friday morning and I'm not exactly sure what heaven will be like but it would have to be something like that day. Perfect weather and willing fish to catch. We boated well over a 100 fish mainly SMB using 1/8 oz single tail jigs. The ned rig was also deadly. Color of the jig did not seem to matter much so long as the retrieval was very slow. In fact my son caught 5 fish on 5 different jig colors in a matter of a few minutes.
At the end of the day we were able to help a fellow fisherman having boat trouble and towed them back to bullfrog. We figured it was the least we could do after such a wonderful day.
On Saturday we tried a different area but the same tactics. The wind was a bit more prevalent making finesse fishing more difficult. Despite that, we boated plenty of fish, released some dandy LMB and even found a spot where we were able to catch 15+ walleye.
We fish Lake Powell for a lot of reasons but the variety of fish is certainly a huge reason. My dad won the contest this year by catching 6 different species.
My two pieces of advice would be to fish really slow if possible and since the water was so clear to long cast whenever possible. Hope this helps!
