RE Boat US towing insurance, I was reading their "unlimited towing" rules a couple of weeks ago deciding if I should sign up for it. The rules define "unlimited" as less than 25 miles from the towing home base. On Lake Powell that would only cover from Wahweap to the Padre Bay area. I don't know how far from Bullfrog that would cover but a 25-mile limit could definitely be an issue.

Have any of you that have Boat US unlimited towing required a tow farther than 25 miles from Wahweap or Bullfrog? If so, did they cover it without hassle? Or alternatively, if you have had experience with Boat US towing (using ARAMARK on LP) insurance at all, I'd like to hear your experience. -Doug

Me too, as I have considered adding Boat US for towing. Of course having even 25 miles of a 50-65 mile tow would be helpful at $250+ per hour.

Yeah, every time this topic comes up I get nervous and call them. And they confirm what I thought I knew. As of today's call, "Unlimited" means complete reimbursement within the service area of the towing company. On Lake Powell, you'd likely use Aramark Exec Services as the towing company. Their service area is the entire lake. That means full reimbursement after-the-fact (you pay out-of-pocket initially).

On lakes where BoatUS has a preferred vendor, they may have special terms established with that vendor which will require no out-of-pocket money from you within their service area. The minimum service area for these preferred providers is 25 miles, but there are usually several providers on the same waterway. It gets complicated but does not apply to Lake Powell.

They record their phone conversations and they would likely give you the same info via email - so you should always have proof if needed.

Hope that helps!

Thanks BartsPlace! My next step of due diligence was to call them, but I wanted to have some 'real world' data in hand before doing so. The info you provided is very helpful and makes sense and saves me the call.

Is there anyone that has ever filed a claim with Boat US for towing on Lake Powell that can vouch for their service and reimbursement? (sorry in advance if I've missed past discussions on this subject)

Maybe I missed something when I tried to research boat us insurance before renewing my policy last June, but I didn't find a fixed $ amount of coverage for my boat. Instead I got a very reduced value of my boat coverage in the event of a loss. It also was more expensive than my current provider and without unlimited towing. My current provider (farmers ) gives me $750 on the water towing and a full replacement $value for total loss. I am not real computer savvy and my have missed something in my research, but would definitely like to have as much coverage for both towing and replacement of loss for the money as I can get for sure. I'll be watching any responses on this subject for sure.

As a Boat US Unlimited Towing subscriber, I too would be interested if anyone has ever filed a claim with Boat US for towing on Lake Powell?

Like others here I’ve always assumed “Unlimited” meant UNLIMITED...but anyone with documented Boat US experience on Lake Powell would be very much appreciated.

@Meatwagon, I can't speak to their boat insurance. I only have their towing product and their basic membership (because the discount it gave me at West Marine paid for it once upon a time). I have used the features of the basic membership (mostly discounts) from time to time. Never (yet) used the towing.

As for regular boat liability/damage insurance, I currently use SkiSafe. Have only filed one claim (after a crazy LP storm). It was approx $5k. They were very prompt and professional - completely meeting my expectations. It is an "agreed value" policy. We established the value together based largely on the replacement estimates, but I had the option to raise or lower the value (and the resulting premium).

Thanks, I didn't realize that the towing was available through just the membership and not through their liability insurance. I will have to take another look at this.
