I would like to head down to Blue Notch this coming Thursday and launch my 16' Lund from shore. They are calling for a chance of rain and I have heard the road can get pretty nasty. How is the road when it gets wet?

Also, is there currently a place to back a boat into the water? My boat is too heavy to man-handle so I will need to back into the water.

Any information or advice would be appreciated.

The road gets the most dangerous wet on the highway side of the pass. Especially the second tier as you start really climbing. We’ve gotten stuck in that portion and have driven it wet other times without issue. The time we got stuck it was raining for about 24 hours straight prior/while we tried driving it. Looking at the weather it might get a quarter inch over three days. I think you’d be okay.

Someone who has been in the last couple weeks can chime in on launching.

I was just there last week and there were some ruts where people had gone through while it was wet. As dungee mentioned it can definitely get sloppy and dangerous when it gets wet. As far as the launch I never went to where the 'launch' spot is but from where I was camping I could see it and at this water level the slope into the lake looks like you could launch fine, just a matter of if it's soft and muddy or rock. Probably doesn't help you a whole lot but that's what I've got

J8tee, is there more than one camp site to accommodate a tent near the water?

Absolutely. There are 3-4 real good spots and plenty more that aren't right on the water. You just might have to drive around a bit till you find the one you like. To my surprise there were two other trucks down there when I showed up and we all had good spots camping out of our trucks

J8tee,
Thanks for the report on the campsites at Blue Notch. Does anyone know if there are tent campsite close to the water on the red canyon side? The area that I am referring to is down the Blue Notch Road then to the left.

I don't think there is much on that side close to the water right now, not that I could see that you could drive to anyway

My son and I bounced down into blue notch last Thursday. Overall the road wasnt that bad. a few of the wash crossing were steep on both sides. It took about 1.5 hrs from the pavement. There is one super steep section close to the lake but we pulled it fine. We got lucky and took the right branch of road when we got close to the lake and found a good place to launch just south of Monte Cristo island. Good rocky bottom with just the right grade. The weather was very Dynamic with storms and wind and cold. We did catch some fat stripers trolling the midline at the mouth of red. Thanks for all the info.
