Another Autumn

With another October looming, my wife and I headed out to the lake for our last trip of the year.

On September 30, we flew from Houston to LV. After spending the night in Vegas, we Ubered over to storage and off we drove in our Excursion. We usually have our boat there as well, but after our disastrous July trip, we've had the boat at Armando's in Page. He worked some magic for us, and we finally made it back out west. My brother Roy stayed in Kona to paddle and teach, so it was just the two of us. After picking up the boat, we headed straight for Stateline. We put out and had one of our best afternoons ever. The boat ran like a champ, and the golden evening hours were glossy and serene. We ran around Wahweap Bay, down to the dam and out to APM. As sun set, we racked the boat, snapped the trailer strap (always more issues), and headed into Page. The next morning, we were off to Laughlin to meet the kids and others.

Definitely my shortest LP run ever. Boy, was it nice, though.
Never seen Page so busy. The European contingent was vast. Lines at the brewery and Big John's were massive! Word is out about this fabulous time of year.
Sad to see Lone Rock so lonely (and water-free).
The road to Flagstaff was terrible. I had not taken this route back to Vegas in a very long time, since we love St. George so much.
I skiied in Florida this year, and I drove by a lot of lakes in Texas this year. Those places are shallow mudholes. I can't imagine how unfortunate are the millions of American boaters who never get to see Lake Powell. I guess it's just as well, as there appear to be millions of others enjoying the gem.
Already looking forward to early 2026.

Flagstaff to page is the worst road I've traveled in years. Just got back from a trip from phx to Montana and back. I dreaded leaving our camp in Kanab and heading south for home. Towing an RV over that road it brutal. Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, Idaho, Montana. A dream to tow compared to page to flag. Or anywhere in AZ for that matter....

We drove this section of road for the first time two summers ago while towing our small 30ft 5th wheel. Prior to that, we hadn't ventured out of CA, OR or WA.

Worst.Road.Ever. I kept thinking "it will probably only last a few more minutes and then it will get better." Nope. I was honestly afraid the hitch was going to rip right out of the truck bed.

Re-paving that road never fixes it either. The soil underneath is just adobe clay, and it always just "settles" where it wants to be, regardless of how the State paves the road over the dirt. A similar problem exists on the railroad tracks between Winslow and Gallup, NM. The tracks are in constant need of fixing, because the dirt just keeps settling.

I’m in AZ fairly frequently, although never that stretch. Overall I’d take AZ roads over most of the states I visit.

And using Colorado as an example of good roads is pretty funny. I bent both axles on my boat trailer on I70 on the way home from the lake in July.

The section of the road on North hwy 89 between Gray Mountain, and just north of the Gap are the worst parts. I routinely slow down to 55mph on quite a few places. I got a flat coming home in June, just north of Cameron. It was pretty hairy but I limped it to a pullout spot. I promptly put brand new tires on the trailer. I told myself "one more trip", but that highway had other plans hahaha.

I avoid interstate travel at all cost... back roads are much more enjoyable. Problem is that all the roads suck that are available to get out of Arizona.
