Abnormal Year or Just Behind Schedule?

To start off I'd like to say that I've been a forum lurker for years but this is my first post. Feels kind of good! The title to the thread basically spells out what I'm asking and due to the fact that I've got a trip with some buddies planned leaving October 5th, I'm curious if the fishing, lake wide, is in an unexplaineable funk for this time of year or is it just behind schedule do to tangible reasons (weather, water temp/level, shad spawn)?

I know it's impossible to predict the future but I also know that this forum has members with lifetimes of fishing experience on this body of water and I would be grateful to hear any thoughts on the topic.

The lake seems it has been in a funk all summer, I would expect fishin’ to improve starting this coming week. Not because I’m going down, it’s just that time of year. Sq

This year is unique due to cool spring weather, large rise in lake level, extended shad spawn, and very hot summer and fall. If the fish had a vote they would take these conditions every year. The hot summer kept large stripers from boiling on schedule. Threadfin Shad are at a population peak. Fish health and size is awesome.

It is impossible to predict, but my guess is that boiling stripers will boil like crazy on calm mornings and then sporadically throughout the day. The Big Event has started in the southern lake. It will continue and grow stronger. Northern lake is still a week behind, but will catch up quickly the last week of September and all of October. The biggest surprise is the quality of the stripers and smallmouth. They are fat and healthy. Catching 10 fat stripers will be more gratifying that catching 50 skinny fish.

This is my prediction. Let me know how I did in the coming months.

What birdsnest said plus 1! We'll be down Oct. 20 - 26 for our 29th yearly Lake Powell Bible Study (ahem) and fishing trip. It's always a fantastic trip, but the fishing last year was pretty slow, and we haven't had what I would call "amazing" fishing for several years. I think we're due.

When water temp's get back in the 60's, I think we will catch fish, the way the weather has changed, it wont be long. October is all most here, and I'm getting the Umbrella rig's out, and ready for action. I will put in at Hite, until water level's wont let me. And then it's San Juan time. It look's like the Shad number's are good, and the fish have gotten fat. It should be a fun winter, for Striper's, if a guy is willing to get after them. Can't wait. I think my first trip will be the middle of Oct. The water should be in the 60's. Wish I were there now.
Have a good one all.

Forgot to mention the night fishing for Crappie, don't know why, more people don't do it, but can't wait for the green glow of the light's, and to see how many Shad come to the light this year. The only year's that you don't catch them, are the low Shad year's, it seam's that way any how.
I'm like the hunter's, I'm getting that feeling, It's why we fish or hunt.

Not to many people are as lucky as Wayne, to be there as much as him.

Are you trolling or casting the umbrella rigs? I have a couple but have never used them at Powell.

You troll umbrella rig's, there are Alabama rig's for bass bass fishing, that are made for casting, but I troll them allso for crappie. But the Alabama rig's are a lot smaller then the Umbrella rig's. I get the UR's, in 2 and 6 oz, and depending on depth of the Striper's, which one I use. There kind of a pain to use, but they work very well. I use Hyper striper bait's, with Walleye assassin plastic's, or the Hyper tail's on them. The UR's are pretty heavy, they would be hard to cast, and keep untangled. Alabama rig's, were made by bass fishermen, for casting.

Thanks. I think I’ve heard the terms used interchangeably but clears it up for me.

Can you give a little more information on how you night fish? I have lights and have fished walleye at Starvation at night and off the docks at Bull Frog, but never caught any Crappie. What type of bait are you using? How deep are you fishing? what type of areas are you looking for? I talked to some people going out at night to catch Crappie at Sand Hollow, but did not get any information on how they do it. I always wanted to try night fishing at Powell, but have only tried the dock and only caught Stripers.

Thanks for any suggestions you might be able to give.

I throw a net, and get Shad, when I can find them. I have had better luck in 60 to 70 ft of water, putting out the green light's. I like to use a 1/16 to 1/8 oz pearl white fish head jig, with a whole Shad. But Crappie jig's will work, without bait. I am going to try the same for Walleye this year, when the water temp's drop, but I'm going to try around gravel hump's, in much shallower water, and see how it work's, using jig, and crawler's, or just a whole crawler. I see where they make a bent hook now, just for crawler's, the show was for Walleye.
If you want to talk Powell, and more about night fishing, give me a call. 435-687-9259

Thanks, When I get home from vacation in another week I will give you a call. Honolulu is a pretty place, (at least most of it is) but I feel more at home and at ease at Powell. Guess I am not much of a traveler. Got a glass bottom boat trip planed this next week, so maybe I will finally see some fish.
