8/26 to 8/28 North end - jerkin for cats!

First trip in August in warm water, slow for Powell. Normal patterns/baits did not work for SMB. Wacky, grubs, Ned rig almost nothing. Jerk baits were most productive. Got into some good afternoon boils across from GHB on Saturday. Stripers were fat and healthy so were the SMB. Caught a mess of bluegill on 2.5” gulp minnows. Hot as a biscuit on Sunday so after a long soak and cold beer (or two) at Two Mile we put up the bimini and started dragging lines at about 4:15. First hookup a nice Walleye for dinner. Then got about 6 stripers on way to The Horn. Pulled two nearly identical baits that run 20-24’. The sexy one got all the fish, nothing on the white one. And every trip to Powell delivers something special. Fishing a small pocket in GHB my buddy caught a nice SMB on a jerk bait so we anchored and worked it. He got another nice 2 lb bass and then hooked 3 catfish on 3 casts on the jerk bait. The cats were in shallow brushy water close to shore and fired up! Can’t wait to get back. Fall fishing will be excellent and the fish fat!

That's fast! What kind of main line? I troll a ton of lead and it seams the faster I go the drag increases pulling the line higher into the water column not allowing the line to sink. I was dragging F18 Rapalas last weekend for lakers here in CO and the only way I could get the bait down deep enough was to troll at <1.5. And when I say deep I mean only about 35'down. My reels only hold about 200' of lead and I was letting out 175'. At those speeds the lure doesn't really wiggle properly. Headed to Powell next week days for 7 full days of casting, trolling, and vertical jigging. CAN'T HARDLY WAIT!!!

12 lb flouro. Yes that is quick but all the experts on WW mention those speeds. It works. Not sure exactly how deep they were running, perhaps they were up higher than 24”? No downriggers. All I know is that it was hot, the beer was ice cold and the fish were biting. It was a great way to spend a half hour cruising down the lake taking in the scenery. I’m sure if we stopped and jigged we could have caught more but it was hot with no wind so a slow roll under the Bimini was what the Dr ordered. We tried trolling another time down lake cruising along at about 35 to 45 foot depth and got nothing. I’m guessing they liked the cool water in the river channel?

Yeah I get it. Trolling at 1.5 MPH for 6hrs + can be like beating your head against a wall...only worse.
