Does anyone know the source of regulation that states any boat above 75 feels on Lake Powell requires a US Coast Guard Pilot's license or master seaman's license? I have been told several times that the rule exists but I can't find any source for it.

Thank you

I believe that rule was recently (last couple of years) rescinded. The big boat companies are delivering 80-, 90-, and 100-foot boats these days and they have been advertised as owner-operated. Then again, I may have read more into that statement than they intended...

Interesting, thank you BartsPlace. Looks that way to me too but I spoke to Adonia and the owner there said the big boats still require a pilot because of the rule. But I have yet to find the rule anywhere

I know I've seen it before, but can't find it now. I guess if you're worried about it, you can take the course and become a licensed captain. They usually offer them annually at Antelope Point.

I remember a restriction on boat length being imposed at Powell - 75', and Big Dog was granted an exception as it was already under construction. I believe that may be the rule that you are thinking of that was repealed. I don't have any info on when a boat captain is required - 75' is more than I'm interested in tackling.

I looked into it a couple years ago when I was considering a 85' HB to purchase. I remember it was a Park service rule and the marinas didn't care. I talked to a few people and they had never heard of anyone ever checking.

Most if not all of the big boats on LP get captain services out to the beach anyway and into the slip. You would be surprised how many boat owners have people beach the HB.

Big dog didn't need the exception, it was a 75 x 22, the first wide body.
it was Crystal Angel II and her length and then her stretch that killed the 75' rule along with the donation to the NPS

Shocking that you would have a captain take it all the way to beaching. Exploration and adventure is more than half the fun. I also wonder if its an insurance thing.

Bartsplace, thanks for the tip. I actually thought it was a USCG master seaman license required, which is quite extensive and requires over a 100 days of experience or something crazy like that.

The boat in the slip next to us always has a captain take it out of the marina and back as their insurance requires it. They are at most a 65' boat.

We used to load up the houseboat with all the food and stuff the owner wanted, drive it to what ever beach they wanted to spend time at, anchor it in place, turn on the genny, lights, A/C. refer, ice maker etc, and then return by small shuttle boat. Then, we set up the owner's ski boat so all they had to do was drive out there and have fun. They would return to dock in the ski boat and then we'd return and bring the HB back and unload it. clean it and set it up for dock storage until the next time.

There has been more than one well known public figures who have beat the props off of their outdrives driving their own HB here on LP.
There has been 100 cases of beer put on one HB for a 1 week trip.

Yes the CG Masters License takes a certain amount of days on the water every year and also just to qualify to take the test. The schooling is tough (2 weeks) and it is usually given once a year here in Page.
