Our yearly fishing trip to Powell has come and gone and we did better than expected. We left on Friday March 24th and unfortunately had to return to real life on March 27th. We Spent half of a day on Friday near the Dam. We chose a spot along the west rock wall approximately 200 yards from the aluminum buoy system and approximately 40-50 yards out from the wall. We started off with bait fishing using a green and blue jig head and a white jig head. We tipped those with a 1/3 of an anchovie and went to work casting towards the wall and out into the open water and allowed the jigs to sink at their own pace. We had hits from the top of the water all the way to below the boat. In two and a half hours three of us had landed 70+ Stripers, what a way to start the trip. The remaining four guys arrived Friday evening with their boat and Saturday we were back at it. Saturday morning we got started a bit later than usual and arrived at the dam around 8:00 to find three boats already on the fish on the west side at the aluminum buoys. We pulled up near them and had some success but wanted something more. Our buddies remained at this spot all morning and were able to pull some fish in. Eventually we ended up back at the buoys and spent the morning there. Saturday was the slowest day and as a group we were able to land around 100 stripers through out the day at the dam on the west side near the rock wall. Sunday was a better day and we returned to the west side rock wall at the buoys around 7:00 and had the whole area to ourselves until about 1100 when a couple of boats started to show up. We started out using anchovies on jig heads but realized that the fish were not as interested in sitting bait. We rigged up some Bass Assasin soft swim baits in salt and pepper silver body with chartreuse tails tipped with anchovies and it was as fast as we could cast and bring it back in. We would cast the lures to the rock wall and after letting them sink for several seconds reeled them in slowly and the Stripers could not resist. We also used a black and clear soft body swim bait that had the same affect. Sunday we pulled in a total of 170 stripers at the dam and had a great time. All together our rough final count from the dam and nearby produced 340 stripers in two and a half days!! Have fun, hope this information helps.
